Sault Ste Marie Travel Tourism

Moose Sculpture at the Civic Centre

Sault Ste Marie was founded because of it strategic location smack in the middle of the Great Lakes. Some original land titles for the area, signed by Samuel de Champlain, still reside in Quebec City.

The locks moved larger ships past the rapids. The Canadian locks are now a national historic site, and the American locks operate as part of the St Lawrence Seaway.

The "Soo" lies on the international boundary, and locals know that half the action is on the OTHER side of the border. Whether it's the shopping that's cheaper the bars and restaurants more interesting, or just because there's something to do there, border crossing comes as second nature to most.
