Sault Ste Marie Hundreds of Winter Childrens & Youth Activities
Sault Ste Marie's winter's are typical for Canada, with the "lake effect" keeping them somewhat mild, yet allowing a lot of snow to fall. Barring unusual cold spells, there is enough snow to make snow forts, toboggan and cross-country ski in the city. Here are a couple of winter suggestions:
- Skate outdoors Many communities maintain outdoor rinks, but you can also visit the more scenic outdoor rinks (no hockey sticks):
- Take a hike along the city's bike paths. They're especially pretty with fresh snow on the ground. The most scenic are:
- Go tobogganning at the various hills in the area:
- P Patch (Ontario) area has parklands to north and east has several toboggan hills
- Sault Seal Recreation Area (Michigan) has a 60 foot sledding hill (unlit) and 4 tubing runs (lit) with a heated chalet on premises with concessions.

- Brady Park - Water Street (Michigan) - Sledding with no schedule and no lights.
- >Go cross-country skiing:
- Algonquin Ski Trail (Michigan): Located in the city limits of Sault Ste. Marie on W. 16th Avenue. Approximately nine miles of groomed trail that is lighted for night use.
- Hiawatha Highlands (Ontario) - 10 km N of SSM, offers 40 km of trails groomed for cross-country skiing with some skating trails. A 2 km trail is lighted for night skiing on certain nights.
- the Algoma Highlands (Ontario) along Lake Superior's Eastern Shore
- Head out of town The countryside around Sault Ste Marie has some winter wonderlands with lots of snow.
- Enjoy the holiday light displays In December each year, there are several popular holiday light displays downtown.
- Go skiing at a number of nearby ski hills, including Searchmont and Buttermilk to the north, and Kamistokia and Munt Dufour to the east
